Article history: Received 30 March 2016 Received in revised form 13 May 2016 Accepted 22 May 2016 Available online 24 May 2016 Powders of hexagonal (W,Ta)Cwere produced following a two-step carburization processwith (W,Ta)2C powder as an intermediate product. XRD measurements indicate that higher temperatures during the first carburization step increase the fraction of Ta in the (W,Ta)2C structure where lower temperatures during the second carburization step seems to increase the fraction of Ta in the (W,Ta)C structure. Lower temperatures during the carburization steps increase the fraction of Σ2 WC/WC grain boundaries and cause the formation of what is interpreted as Σ4 boundaries. The (W,Ta)C powders can be successfully used to produce fine grained WC-Co based cemented carbides. The pre-alloying with Ta appears to have a softening effect on the material. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. The Effect of sintering temperature on microstructure and hardness of milled WC- 20 wt.% equiatomic (Fe,Co) cemented carbides
In this study, WC–20 wt.% equiatomic (Fe,Co) powder mixture was milled in a planetary ball mill. The effects of different milling time (15 min, 5h, 10h, and 25 h) and sintering temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of this equi-Fe substituted cermet were investigated. The structural evolution and the crystallite size changes of the powders during milling were monitored by...

Fine-grained tungsten carbide copper (WC-Cu) cemented carbide was sintered via spark plasma sintering at 1773K using a fine WC powder with a mean particle size of 0.11 mm. The mechanical properties were compared with tungsten carbide cobalt (WC-Co) cemented carbide and a binderless WC-sintered material. The Vickers hardness and fracture toughness obtained by the indentation fracture method for ...
متن کاملEffect of SiC nanoparticles addition on mechanical properties and wear resistance of cemented carbides fabricated by spark plasma sintering
WC-10Co cemented carbides containing 1 to 4 wt% SiC nanoparticles were prepared by spark plasma sintering. The effects of SiC content on microstructure, mechanical properties and wear resistance of the sintered materials were studied. Microstructural studies showed that SiC addition resulted in WC grain coarsening. In addition, the hardness decreased with increasing SiC content. However, the fr...
متن کاملEffect of WC/Co coherency phase boundaries on Fracture toughness of the nanocrystalline cemented carbides
The effect of coherency WC/Co phase boundaries on the fracture toughness of the nanocrystalline WC-Co cemented carbides is studied by MD simulation method. The simulation results show that the nanocrystalline WC-Co cemented carbides with coherency WC/Co phase boundaries has higher fracture toughness than that without coherency WC/Co phase boundaries. Moreover, the mechanism of why coherency WC/...

In this study, the correlation existing among grinding, surface integrity, and flexural strength is investigated for WC-Co cemented carbides (hardmetals). A fine-grained WC-13 wt % Co grade and three different surface conditions: (1) ground, (2) mirror-like polished (reference), and (3) ground plus high-temperature annealed, are investigated. Surface integrity and mechanical characterization is...
